Quick Installation Guide for
FireSite™ Web Site Acceleratior, Version 2.0
Speed Booster, Standard, and Multimedia Editions
for PowerPC and 68K / Mac OS 7.5.x,7.6.x / WebSTAR 1.3.2, 2.x
What's included here?
FireSite™ Web Site Accelerator, version 2.0
This patent-pending software will dramatically increase the speed,
capacity, and throughput of your Web server. ("T-1 speeds using ISDN")
There are three Editions of FireSite:
Speed Booster Edition: up to 5Mb of GIFs and JPEGs accelerated
Designed to accelerate a single Web site; great for independent Web designers.
Standard Edition: up to 50Mb of GIFs and JPEGs accelerated, plus "virtual domains" and real-time reports
Designed light-to-midrange Web hosting of multiple business-type Web sites.
Multimedia Edition: unlimited acceleration, including graphics, "plug-in" multimedia, and downloads,
plus "virtual domains", real-time reports, configurable intelligent RAM caches,
special features for live WebCams and ad banners, multimedia "anti-hijacking" system,
"Welcome Mat" system, instant multimedia "Themes", and automatic bandwidth-balanced
management of multiple Web servers as a RAIC.
Provides industrial-strength acceleration, Web hosting, and multimedia management.
All three FireSite Editions are contained in a single WebSTAR plug-in;
different FireSite Authorization Keys will "unlock" the different packages.
Also in this distribution:
ClearWay Simple Cache Manager, version 1.01
This WebSTAR plug-in works with FireSite to manage your server's
RAM caches. (May also be used by itself, without FireSite.)
ClearWay Simple PPP Restart, version 1.0
This Mac OS system extension is designed for Web servers running FireSite
that use a dialup modem connection to the Internet. It helps keep
the phone line "up" as much as possible. (May also be used without FireSite.)
Where should I start?
Start by installing the FireSite Web Site Accelerator. Once you have
the FireSite plug-in installed and configured, set up "replication" and
then virtual domains if you wish.
Use the ClearWay Simple Cache Manager to keep your WebSTAR and NetCloak
RAM caches "in sync" with the files on disk. Use this even if you decide not to
use the FireSite products themselves.
If you are using a dialup PPP line (28.8K, 33.6K, or 56K) for your
server's Internet connection, take a look at the ClearWay Simple PPP Restart
extension; it can help you keep the PPP line open automatically.
FireSite™ Quick Start Guide

<http://www.clearway.com/pages/how.html>. It explains
FireSite's Web site acceleration technique and has some clear
pictures showing how it all works.
Preparation Time
-------------
If you are already running a WebSTAR server, it should take
about 20 minutes to accelerate your Web site with FireSite
once you have some remote high-bandwidth FTP/Web space
to use as a cache.
Ingredients
---------
1) An already-operating Web server with
- WebSTAR 1.3.2 or later (WebSTAR 2.0 or later strongly recommended)
- MacOS 7.5.x or later
- 10 Mb free disk space
- 5 Mb free RAM
- OpenTransport 1.1.1 or later
2) A full-time Internet connection from
your Web server to the Internet, running at 28.8Kbps
or faster.
3) Access to 5-10 Mb of Web space
on a 'remote' Web server that has a higher-speed
Internet connection than yours. Many
FireSite users get this Web space from their ISP.
The remote space must be accessible by standard FTP.
ClearWay Technologies can also help you find a convenient,
reliable, and affordable ISP that is familiar with FireSite.
Please contact support@clearway.com for more information!
4) The FireSite 2.0 plug-in file itself.
5) (Optional) The "FireSite-Textures" folder, which is used
only with FireSite Multimedia Edition.
Procedure
--------
INSTALL THE PLUG-IN
1) Quit WebSTAR
2) Increase WebSTAR's memory partition by 4000K, by
using Get Info in the Finder.
You may be able to reduce this amount later.
3) Copy FireSite into the WebSTAR Plug-Ins folder.
[Optional] Copy the FireSite-Textures folder into the top-level
WebSTAR folder itself. (Used only for Multimedia Edition.)
4) Launch WebSTAR. You should see a welcome message, followed
by a "FireSite (no Authorization Keys active) ready" message.
PROTECT THE ADMINISTRATION REALM
5) Using WebSTAR Admin, set up a realm with a name of
"FIRESITE-ADMIN" and a match string of "admin.fire".
FireSite will not allow setup or administration unless
this Realm is password protected.
6) Create a username/password for yourself in the
new FireSite administration Realm.
ACCESS FIRESITE
7) Use a Netscape 2.0 -or-better Web browser,
access "http://www.yourserver.com/admin.fire"
8) Read the license agreement and accept it if you wish.
9) Enter your FireSite Web Site Accelerator Authorizion Key.
A Demo Key is available if you wish to test-drive FireSite.
CONFIGURE FOR ACCELERATION
10) Click the "Remote Setup" button at the top of the
administration page.
11) Enter all required information about your 'remote'
FTP/Web space.
12) Click "Use this server for replication", and click
"Apply."
13) FireSite will check your configuration information,
and if everything checks out, that's it! FireSite
will manage all other details of the acceleration
process for you.
If your configuration information doesn't work on the first
try, check the WebSTAR window for a blow-by-blow diagnosis.
Operating Notes
------------
The very first time each 'file object' (page or graphic) is requested from
your server, FireSite scans for all the relevant information about the file,
and updates its database. This does not recur with subsequent hits.
