  6. What's included here?
  7. FireSite™ Web Site Accelerator, version 2.0
  8.   This patent-pending software will dramatically increase the speed,
  9.   capacity, and throughput of your Web server. ("T-1 speeds using ISDN")
  10.  
  11.   There are three Editions of FireSite:
  12.   Speed Booster Edition: up to 5Mb of GIFs and JPEGs accelerated
  13.                       Designed to accelerate a single Web site; great for independent Web designers.
  14.  
  15.   Standard Edition: up to 50Mb of GIFs and JPEGs accelerated, plus "virtual domains" and real-time reports
  16.                       Designed light-to-midrange Web hosting of multiple business-type Web sites.

  18.  Multimedia Edition: unlimited acceleration, including graphics, "plug-in" multimedia, and downloads, 
  19.                        plus "virtual domains", real-time reports, configurable intelligent RAM caches,

  34.   This Mac OS system extension is designed for Web servers running FireSite
  35.   that use a dialup modem connection to the Internet.  It helps keep 
  36.   the phone line "up" as much as possible. (May also be used without FireSite.)

  38. Where should I start?
  39. Start by installing the FireSite Web Site Accelerator.  Once you have
  40. the FireSite plug-in installed and configured, set up "replication" and
  41. then virtual domains if you wish.
  42.  
  43. Use the ClearWay Simple Cache Manager to keep your WebSTAR and NetCloak 
  44. RAM caches "in sync" with the files on disk.  Use this even if you decide not to
  45. use the FireSite products themselves.

  47. If you are using a dialup PPP line (28.8K, 33.6K, or 56K) for your 
  48. server's Internet connection, take a look at the ClearWay Simple PPP Restart
  49. extension; it can help you keep the PPP line open automatically.

  60. Preparation Time
  61. -------------
  62. If you are already running a WebSTAR server, it should take 
  63. about 20 minutes to accelerate your Web site with FireSite
  64. once you have some remote high-bandwidth FTP/Web space 
  65. to use as a cache.

  68. Ingredients
  69. ---------
  70.  
  71. 1) An already-operating Web server with
  72.    - WebSTAR 1.3.2 or later (WebSTAR 2.0 or later strongly recommended)
  73.    - MacOS 7.5.x or later
  74.    - 10 Mb free disk space
  75.    - 5 Mb free RAM
  76.    - OpenTransport 1.1.1 or later
  77.    
  78. 2) A full-time Internet connection from
  79.    your Web server to the Internet, running at 28.8Kbps
  80.    or faster.
  81.    
  82. 3) Access to 5-10 Mb of Web space
  83.    on a 'remote' Web server that has a higher-speed
  84.    Internet connection than yours.  Many
  85.    FireSite users get this Web space from their ISP.
  86.    The remote space must be accessible by standard FTP.

  92. 4) The FireSite 2.0 plug-in file itself.

  94. 5) (Optional) The "FireSite-Textures" folder, which is used
  95.      only with FireSite Multimedia Edition.

  98. Procedure
  99. --------
  100. INSTALL THE PLUG-IN
  101. 1)  Quit WebSTAR
  102. 2)  Increase WebSTAR's memory partition by 4000K, by
  103.       using Get Info in the Finder.
  104.       You may be able to reduce this amount later.
  105. 3)  Copy FireSite into the WebSTAR Plug-Ins folder.
  106.       [Optional] Copy the FireSite-Textures folder into the top-level
  107.       WebSTAR folder itself. (Used only for Multimedia Edition.)
  108. 4)  Launch WebSTAR.  You should see a welcome message, followed
  109.       by a "FireSite (no Authorization Keys active) ready" message.
  110.  
  111. PROTECT THE ADMINISTRATION REALM
  112. 5)  Using WebSTAR Admin, set up a realm with a name of
  113.       "FIRESITE-ADMIN" and a match string of "admin.fire".  
  114.       FireSite will not allow setup or administration unless 
  115.       this Realm is password protected.
  116. 6)  Create a username/password for yourself in the
  117.       new FireSite administration Realm.
  118.  
  119. ACCESS FIRESITE 
  120. 7)  Use a Netscape 2.0 -or-better Web browser,
  121.       access "http://www.yourserver.com/admin.fire"
  122. 8)  Read the license agreement and accept it if you wish.
  123. 9)  Enter your FireSite Web Site Accelerator Authorizion Key.  
  124.       A Demo Key is available if you wish to test-drive FireSite.

  126. CONFIGURE FOR ACCELERATION
  127. 10) Click the "Remote Setup" button at the top of the
  128.        administration page.
  129. 11) Enter all required information about your 'remote'
  130.        FTP/Web space.
  131. 12) Click "Use this server for replication", and click
  132.       "Apply."
  133. 13) FireSite will check your configuration information,
  134.       and if everything checks out, that's it!  FireSite
  135.       will manage all other details of the acceleration
  136.       process for you.
  137.       If your configuration information doesn't work on the first
  138.       try, check the WebSTAR window for a blow-by-blow diagnosis.

  141. Operating Notes
  142. ------------
  143. The very first time each 'file object' (page or graphic) is requested from
  144. your server, FireSite scans for all the relevant information about the file,
  145. and updates its database.  This does not recur with subsequent hits.
